flash not recognized &/or just spins forever

I have Vista (I don't have the money to upgrade and I inherited the computer!) and I use the most recent version of FF: 22.0.  I have the most recent version of adobe flash (11.8.800.94).  The plugin does show up, and is apparently the most up to date one.  RealPlayer and VLC are also on the computer.

Here's the issues.

1)  BBC.com doesn't recognize that I have flash at all.  I simply get an error message saying "You need flash to view this content" and a link to adobe.

2)  ANY video that is flash looks as if it will behave normally but the spinning wheel just goes and goes and nothing ever loads.  HOWEVER, something called JW Player works just fine.  I end up having to search for links that just happen to use the JW version, which is kind of time consuming.

I have run through all the online troubleshooting offered by adobe and no changes.  In my gut I feel like this is something simple, and I need a little help, please.

Thanks so much!!!!!!
